The silent battle after the flames
The summer of 2025 left an indelible mark on the mountainous Limassol. Villages that for centuries were the lungs of life and culture were engulfed in flames. Forests, animals, vineyards, houses, memories – everything turned to ashes in a few hours.
Today, the scorched landscapes are not just an image of destruction; they are the daily life of the inhabitants. These people live with the smoke etched in their memories and with the future uncertain.
Omodos: An example that reveals the magnitude of the crisis
We visited Omodos, one of the most famous villages in the Limassol Mountains. Although it was only partially affected by the fires, the damage to the economy is evident: jobs have been cut by almost half.
If this is happening in Omodos, which still maintains tourism and visibility, imagine what the villages that were completely destroyed are going through. There, cafes remain empty, taverns wait for visitors who do not come, and families live with the anxiety of survival.
The people behind the burnt things
The residents are not numbers. They are parents, grandparents, young people who chose to stay in their place rather than abandon it. They have children who need to study, loans that are running out, crops that have been lost, small businesses that are in danger of closing.
The fire burned not only nature but also their hope. And yet, they stand tall, trying to rebuild their lives with dignity.
What can we do?
Miracles are not needed; simple but meaningful actions are needed:
☑️ Instead of going for coffee in the city, let's have one in the village cafes.
☑️ Instead of spending money on dinner in luxury restaurants, let's support their taverns.
☑️ Let's buy their wine, fruit, bread and handmade products.
☑️ Let's spend a weekend in a guesthouse in the mountains.
These acts may seem small to us, but for those affected by the fire, they are a breath of life.
Putting themselves in their place
No one knows what it's like to see your home threatened, your life's possessions reduced to ashes, unless they experience it. For the residents of Limassol Mountain, this is not theory; it is reality.
If we put ourselves in their shoes, we will understand that helping is not charity; it is an obligation. Because tomorrow we may be in their shoes.
The soul of Cyprus is in its villages
Our villages are our roots, our memory, our soul. If we abandon them, we too lose part of our identity.
We Cypriots have beautiful souls within us. We know what solidarity and support mean. Let us prove it in action. Let us become the force that will keep our villages alive. Because only in this way will we keep our own soul alive.
We Cypriots have proven many times that we know what solidarity means. Today, the opportunity is before us: to stand by the fire victims not only with words, but with deeds.
👉 Let us be their voice and their strength. By supporting the fire-stricken villages, we support the future of Cyprus itself.
