July 23, 2025 is now recorded as the darkest day in the modern history of Cyprus. Mountainous Limassol, a lung of greenery and culture, was given over to the flames. In less than 48 hours, over 120 square kilometers of land were burned: forests, vineyards, olive groves, crops, houses, monuments and lives. The tragedy left behind two people dead, dozens injured, approximately 93 destroyed houses, 120 vehicles and over 1,500 beehives lost in the ashes. The number of animals burned alive is estimated in the tens of thousands.

What many describe simply as a "natural disaster" is in reality the result of years of indifference, understaffing and state incompetence. The flames were the spark; the real fire was incompetence.

📍 The chronicle of the disaster

The fire broke out at noon in the village of Mallia, amid temperatures of 43–44 °C and strong winds. Within a few hours, the fronts expanded north and east, surrounding villages such as Souni Zanakia, Vasa, Vouni, Koilani, Lofou, Pera Pedi, Monagri.

Residents abandoned their homes in smoke and panic. Testimonies describe images of the Apocalypse: people running with their children and animals in their arms, elderly people trapped, animals screaming in the flames.

👥 The human stories behind the ashes

  • Stavros Antoniou, 3rd generation winemaker:

“I arrived at the vineyard but the fire had already engulfed everything. The village was blocked. We didn’t have time to do anything.”

  • Marina, young winemaker:

“I sold the apartment to invest here. And now? The fire is on top, the 10-year loan is on the bottom…”

  • Resident of Lofou:

“When the water trucks arrived, it was already too late. The flames were moving faster than the vehicles.”

  • Testimonies show that the fire was not only a disaster; it was also a betrayal.

🐝 The loss of beehives and ecosystems

Beekeeping in the area has suffered a devastating blow. More than 1,500 hives have been lost. Scientists say it takes 7–10 years for bee populations to recover from such losses. Without bees, there is no pollination, so there is no agriculture.

In addition, the loss of forests means that Cyprus’ biodiversity has suffered an irreparable blow. Hundreds of birds, reptiles and mammals have disappeared in the flames.

💰 Economic impact

The damage is not limited to the burned houses. The vineyards and wineries of the Limassol Mountains, which are the backbone of Cyprus' wine tourism, will take at least 3–5 years to recover. Without tourism and production, the communities are threatened with economic decline.

🏛 State response: words without actions

While residents watched their homes burn, ministers were taking photos at the front lines. It was announced that "1,000 farmers were compensated," while applications were still pending. They were asking for "excuses" from people who had lost everything.

The lack of a fire protection plan proved tragic:

  • Villages without fire hydrants,

  • Forest roads in poor condition,

  • Lack of coordination between services.

  • Cyprus experienced again what it had seen in the fires of 2021 and 2022: promises without prevention.

⚖️ The responsibility that no one takes on

The phrase "we will leave no one behind" was heard again. But the residents only see ashes and promises. The state has failed to protect people, animals and forests. And the worst thing? It is trying to hide it under communication campaigns.

🌱 From ashes to rebirth – What the residents are asking for

Mountainous Limassol is not asking for charity. It is asking for:

  • A fire protection plan with modern equipment,

  • Adequate water and infrastructure upgrades,

  • Funding for reforestation and support for farmers,

  • A strategic development plan that will keep the villages alive.

  • Without these, the next fire will not be an "if" but a "when".

📢 Conclusion

The fires of July 2025 were not just a natural disaster. They were the result of political inaction. If we do not demand change, history will repeat itself.

Silence is complicity.

Cyprus must not burn again.
