Beekeeping and Fires: A Battle for Survival
The fires in the Limassol Mountains destroyed over 1,500 beehives.
Beekeeping takes years to recover – bees are essential for pollination, agriculture and biodiversity.
Supporting beekeepers and replanting flowering species is vital for the survival of the ecosystem.
The July 2025 fires in the Limassol Mountains did not just burn down trees and houses. They hit beekeeping hard, one of the fundamental pillars of the ecosystem and the local economy.
More than 1,500 bee colonies were lost in a single night, wiping out the life’s work of dozens of beekeepers.
The loss is not limited to honey. Bees are the invisible workers of nature: they pollinate plants, trees, vines, fruits. Without them, Cyprus’ agriculture and biodiversity are threatened.
How long does it take to recover?
Commercial beehives: Hives damaged by fire or smoke take months to 1–2 years to return to production, provided there is immediate support with new hives, food and treatments.
Wild bees: Their populations recover more slowly. Studies show that it takes 4–5 years for them to start appearing in abundance again in burned forests, while full restoration of diversity can take decades.
Ecosystems: Forests take 30–50 years to recover, and with them the balance of biodiversity.
What can be done now:
Recovery can be accelerated with targeted interventions:
Hive replacements for beekeepers who have lost their swarms.
“Bee hotels” (artificial nests) to enhance wild bees. Experiments in Australia have shown immediate results within a few months.
Replanting flowering plants (thyme, oregano, daffodil, rosemary) that provide food for bees in all seasons.
Special support schemes from the state and the EU for beekeepers, as beekeeping is not a luxury but a key link in the food chain.
Why it concerns us all
Without bees, we will have no fruit, no wine, no olive oil, no healthy forests.
Taking care of pollinators is taking care of our own survival.
Beekeepers are demanding:
Immediate compensation,
A plan to repopulate beehives,
State and European support for planting and prevention.
This is not a luxury; it is a matter of life for Cyprus.
Let us not let silence replace the hum of the bee.
